Urbanization and the civic opera house of chicago

The Civic Opera House in Chicago is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.  The building is located in the downtown Chicago and it is a hybrid of the Art of Nouveau and Art Deco styles which make it claim a position not only in the whole United States of American but also in the world (Civic Opera House, 2008).  The house was constructed in 1929 but  a major renovation was started in 1993 to 1996 which gave it a major face lift. (Kvaran, 2007)

This building is home to the famous Lyric Opera of Chicago. In its history, it has been home to many Broadways shows including the famous Sunset Boulevard, The Phantom of the Opera, and many other celebrated musical artists from Bjork to Frank Sinatra.  The building has also housed several private events offering a splendor not witnessed in the any other buildings in the city.

The influence of the building since it was constructed can be well understood in the initial purpose for its construction. It is rumored that the proprietor who put up the building Samuel Insull was infuriated by the fact that here daughter had not been accepted in the New York Metropolitan Opera. Therefore he wanted to put up a building which would give her daughter a chance to rule the opera world.  The architecture of the building displays it like a huge change and it is sometimes referred to as Insull's Throne with its back facing New York. It is argued that Insull wanted her daughter figuratively sit in the throne as star of opera.

However much of the influence of the building has been its architectural and urbanization influence. In the 1930s the modern city in America were just taking their shape and the patter of urbanization could be described as having being incomplete. There was a level of attachment to rural life taking into considerations it was time of depression.

Although there were many factors which influenced the patter of urbanization, the building of the Civic Opera House in Chicago brought new life in the city. The house took opera to another level and this had a positive impact on the number of people who were coming to the city to watch operas. Therefore the building was one of the attractions in term art performance which attracted people to the city life.

The building housed several operas and remained home to Chicago opera. At the time, opera became an influential part of the life of the Chicago public and therefore the building of the house brought more people. The house gave a new life to opera performance bringing a new life to the city. The house provided a lavish theater which could accommodate 3,563 people at a time.  Apart from the artistic life it brought to the city, the house has also been the seat of important politics in Chicago. It provided a new lavish housing for the political class where they could meet for private functions. (Chappell, 1992)

The building was also a major boost to urbanization in Chicago especially after the famous Chicago Fire had destroyed most of the landmark architectural building in downtown Chicago in 1871. Although there were other building that had come up since the fire destroyed the city, The Civic Opera House was put up in an architectural design that it influenced the modern architecture in the city. It was symbolic and people did not hesitate to nickname it as Insull's Throne. (Bude, 2008)

The Civic Opera House of Chicago has been and will remain to be influential in the life of people of Chicago. Its influence in the artistic life of the people has been great and is bound to continue influencing their life for a long time.

To celebrate the completion of a major fundraising effort, GE turned to Hot On Broadway to entertain their employees and families. But with a limited time frame, can a customized Broadway show be built in time to reward the audience?

Here's how Hot On Broadway met the challenge...

Initiative:
In 2007, GE employees were instrumental in fundraising over $22 million to aid in the renovation of the historic Proctor's Theatre. To celebrate the completion of the project, GE approached Hot On Broadway to transform their annual Family Day event. GE needed a high-energy, family-friendly Broadway show to entertain a diverse crowd. Hot On Broadway delivered the event in less than 12 weeks.

Solution:
Working as a partner with GE, we customized a production, identified key goals, and put together a company of 15 headliners pulled from the Broadway companies of Chicago, Grease, Jersey Boys, The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, The Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and Wicked.

Results:
Over 5,000 guests were welcomed at the door by photographers, street performers, and characters from Broadway blockbusters. Each person received a customized program of the event, and food and beverages were served throughout the theatre. With cast members re-creating their show-stopping moments from Broadway, the Hot On Broadway performance culminated in confetti explosions, standing ovations, and thunderous applause.

Adelphi University is pleased to announce the appointment of William Prenevost as the new assistant dean and executive director of the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AU PAC), the cultural arts anchor for the Long Island region. Mr. Prenevost had previously served as interim executive director of the AU PAC since August 2010, supervising the management and production staff, and leading a strategic planning process for the center which opened in 2008. With this appointment, he will also serve as assistant dean for the departments of theatre, dance, and music, overseeing recruitment, faculty development, and a new performing arts management program.

 

William Prenevost's 30 year career in arts management includes successful leadership roles in major regional theaters, symphonies, and art museums. From 2008 to present, he headed his own consulting practice in which he provided executive management services for the Dallas Theater Center, and Milwaukee Repertory Theater where he successfully guided the top-tier company through a recession-spurred budget crisis. From 2002 to 2008, he was managing director of the Kansas City Repertory theatre, and served on the Executive Committee of the prestigious League of Regional Theatres.

 

From 1995 to 2001, Mr. Prenevost was the senior officer for external affairs at the Cleveland Museum of Art, one of America's leading museums. He guided the museum's marketing and communications program increasing the museum's attendance and its national profile. The world of music is unlimited and it extends beyond rhythm and lyrics, to feel and momentum. The sign of good music is when it is enjoyable or foot-tapping and the best for today's generation is rap music. Today's rap songs have not only evolved but have also changed the world of music and have become a dominating music genre.

The history of rap music can be traced back to the West African praise singing and historical poetry by griots or djeli, antecedents of contemporary rap music. It became popular in US around 1970s but the term originates in African American slang, meaning to talk. The country performing griots and the creation of drum sequences with influences from Mexico, Cuba and other regions helped to shape this music. Rap music is vocal music that employs recitative, usually over a rhythmic foundation. Lyrics may be improvised or composed, and are usually topical, relating to contemporary events and social issues. Early rap music was influenced by disco but developments with sampling machines led to different music forms.

 

Rap music goes hand in hand with Hip hop; in fact, it can be said that hip hop was earlier called disco rap, which developed from basic rap music. As hip hop evolved, rap music lost its individual identity and merged with hip hop. Hip Hop magazines have a large place in rap music history, the first ever published Hip Hop publication The Hip Hop Hit List, which contained the very first rap music record chart ever. This magazine's role was instrumental in the early commercial success of rap music. Though, the subgenres of rap have developed to a great extent. Pop rap, Ragga, Reggae ton, Rap opera, Rap rock, Rap core, Rap metal, Underground rap, Conscious rap are many of the music forms that evolved with new techniques of music coming in. Pop rap is the earlier version of hip hop while Ragga, originally Ragamuffin, shares its similarity with rap in the Sampling technique which serves a prominent role for both of them. Reggae ton is predominantly Latin urban music but it is also combined with rapping as most artists recite their lyrics in a rap fashion.

A rap opera is a series of rap songs in the form of an opera, inspired by the concept of opera. Rap opera may be a purely auditory experience, or it may be associated with a musical, comic book, or other art form. It is a relatively young, spontaneous form, performed more by amateurs and non-profit groups than by professional emcees. In 2001, MTV debuted a tele-film entitled Carmen: A Hip Hopera, directed by Robert Townsend and starring Beyoncé Knowles and Mekhi Phifer. A Rap rock is a cross genre fusion of elements of hip hop with various forms of rock, which was introduced in early 90s and gained popularity later in the decade; but it is often confused for rap metal and rap core. Rap core is a sub-genre of rap rock fusing elements of hip hop with punk rock or hardcore punk; often confused with Rap Metal. Rap Metal is a combination of rap and heavy metal; it seeks to fuse the most aggressive elements of hardcore rap and heavy metal and became an extremely popular variation of alternative metal during the late 90s.

Rap lyrics are sung with a flow with different rhyming techniques to a musical accompaniment. Rap beats in rap music were initially drum rhythms which gradually became hard percussive beats stressed as required with different vocal and instrumental elements. While rap lyrics can vary from dreams and themes to materialism and crime, the Rhythm & Blues lyrics are very philosophical and music feels somehow inevitable. Rhythm and Blues is black pop music, while is softer than pop and rock. It is a mixture of jazz, gospel, soul and neo-soul and the singers are emotionally engaged with the lyrics.

Underground rap is all about non-commercial music of small artists with independent labels. This is a kind of alternative hip hop, deviating from the conventional, with anti-commercial or socially conscious or positive lyrics than the mainstream. Conscious rap is a form of hip hop wherein the lyrics are based on social issues. It has parallels with political hip hop and also encompasses the subjects like religion, African American culture, everyday life and the state of Hip Hop itself. This style is somewhat influenced by Jazz-rap and is often a cause of controversy due to the subjects it deals with. The development of music through technology and innovations is a fact, but it was not mutually exchanged; rather battles took place on streets to know who's the best and that is how new stuff was presented by challengers. Battle rap or battle rapping or battle rhyming is a kind of rapping which includes bragging and dissing. The rappers are not allowed to use profanities or sexually suggestive lyrics, punishable by disqualification. Rappers rap with flowing lyrics that are relevant to the present situation. The judges decide the winner of the battle as per their flow.

Rap music today has evolved like never before and has now blended with hip hop. The sound of rap would never be the same with all the technological advancements and also a blend of various cultures with different music. Rap music has indeed transformed the world of western music into culture's melting pot.

American Imperialism in the 19th Century

American Imperialism seems as much a part of America today as it has been during the American Revolutionary period during 1775-1783, when Americans practiced the characteristic of controlling and influencing the weaker nations and their people.  The United States interest in the Western Hemisphere during that time, proved just as prevalent as her interest in the Middle East today. Americans were and still are, in many cases, stereotyped as a power machine who constantly meddles in the affairs of other developing nations. These nations promise the abundance of cheap labor and raw natural resources. For many Americans in key positions, these resources hold the promise of aid in the development and steady employment of resources that can add meat and potatoes to the pot of soup stirred by a greedy U.S. economy.

It has been the start of the American imperialism in the 19th Century that deemed viable in adding to the many events that help shaped history.  Although many Americans supported overseas expansion, many campaigned against the hostile principles of war-like criminal -aggressions that violated many freedoms, especially in the Philippines.  It was the late 19 century that witnessed the onset of technology and networks of communication, transportation and commerce, coming together to form empires that amplified a time when industrial developments were in closer reach than at any time before. The imperialism decade paved the way for the United States to become the most important industrial power in the world, which added to the undeniable importance of finding markets and other avenues to obtain raw materials.

According to The American Anti-Imperialist League, imperialism is hostile and evil.  Some say that American imperialism divided certain countries and destroyed the basic principles of their citizens; others say that American imperialism developed training and encouraged the people. The truth is that American imperialism was brought about to interfere and then join in and maybe take over the promise of developing prosperities in respects to England, France and Russia.  With later additions of Germany and Japan, the aggressive and rapid drive to control foreign lands, as it was apparent, seemed inevitable; nevertheless, while Americans were busy trying to justify imperial control other social, economic, and political forces would quickly mix into the soup that was just beginning to boil. Those social, economic and political forces would include the selling of products, the gaining of resources, the spreading of liberty, religion, civilization and let us not forget the addition of several naval stations across the pacific to move ships to china.  Americans propelled imperialism as a means to conquer and then protect its existing as well as, overseas territories.

The outcome of the foreign policy of American imperialism going forward into the twentieth Century is that of the swallowing of a bitter, but sweet drink, not fully knowing if, that in time, it will sour the stomach or quietly evaporate.  It is wide known that since the 1800's when American imperialism hit its peak, America has been influencing other countries politics, economics, and cultures, spurring its own way of helping nations maintain liberty and democracy. Panama and Pueto Rico are nations where Americans have planted a democratic government that ensures that all of its people are free and equal, while offering economic support where necessary.

Today there seems to be a different kind of imperialism seen through the eyes of America.  Cultural imperialism can be seen as the promotion of American industries to other nations in the hope that American culture may become widespread and the norm. Could it be that America, with all of its pros and cons, still hold an appetite of aggression in a desire to influence other cultures?  Many countries seem satisfied with the past and present developments of American influence.  Could it be that the promotion of an American Culture would deem a viable attribute?  Surely, there seem to be no lack of shortages of the many immigrants that are seeking the American way of life, even today.

In closing and as I've written before, it has been the start of the American imperialism in the 19th Century that deemed viable in adding to the many events that help shaped history. The United States sought to control trade circumstances in the Philippines, Panama, Hawaii, Cuba, etc…even if it meant fighting a war, such as the Spanish-American war. Still today, America is resourceful in securing nations that promise an abundance of cheap labor and raw natural resources that continue to hold the promise of aid in the development and steady employment of our United States economy and those who wish to join us. America continues to assist in maintaining liberty and democracy in her attempt to police the world.  Even the outcome of the foreign policy of American imperialism going forward into the twentieth Century remains to be the envy of the world, mostly due to the developments of the American imperialism and her influences; it is primarily through those influences America hold 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population.  It is assumed that Americans are, in many cases, stereotyped as a power machine that is constant in the meddling in the affairs of other developing nations; moreover, there is no other place that is as influential in the matter of politics, economics, culture diversity, military strength and social ethics, than that of the United States of America.

Talent spotting at the Iford Festival

Whether you are an opera fan or simply love an evening of picnicking with friends in the magical Peto Garden at Iford Manor, the Iford Festival has something special for everyone. In its 15th season, Iford has become highly-respected among experienced opera-goers and newcomers alike.

From early June to mid August the annual Iford Festival will showcase three operas, Hansel and Gretel, Don Giovanni and Rodelinda, together with four jazz promenades and two classical concerts.

The creatives at Iford fancy themselves as talent spotters. Their young conductor, Oliver Gooch has just conducted Madame Butterfly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, and he's coming back for his eighth Iford season this year, conducting Hansel and Gretel. The witch will be sung by one of the three Welsh tenors, Alun Rhys Jenkins. To top this, Iford's Hansel & Gretel can boast an intriguing new director this year, Will Tuckett, who also directs and choreographs at the Royal Opera House, and promises dreamy, evocative and sometimes demonic music – not to mention the cup cakes and puppetry.

Caryl Hughes, one of the hottest young opera stars on the national scene, when recently interviewed in the Daily Telegraph, hailed her experience at Iford last summer as the highlight of her career. I asked Judy, what lures these top professionals to little old Iford?

‘These are singers and players of such breathtaking calibre, so close and communicative that every subtle nuance tells you more. For the performers, at Iford there is nowhere to hide – this is a hugely tempting challenge for any brilliant performer and great directors love it even more.'

Intimacy is what makes Iford special. Operas are staged in-the-round to an audience of about ninety. The Peto garden has that other-worldly atmosphere. Its quaint terraces, topiary, ancient Italian carved stone and Venetian wrought-iron are captivating. For all performances the garden opens at 6pm for picnicking as the sun slants over the lawn on a summer evening. To sit under the arches of the tiny cloister, witnessing a close-up performance in the central square – which may be open to the sky in fine weather – feels such an extraordinary privilege.

‘To imagine that this is also a place where notable international musical careers are being nurtured is really satisfying' says Judy. ‘Look at Christian Curnyn. He's been coming here since the year 2000 when he was unknown outside London, but this year he'll bring down his harpsichord to conduct our Rodelinda after Handel opera seasons at Sydney Opera House and Chicago and numerous acclaimed recordings.  He says he's done some of his best work here and he can't do without his ‘Iford fix'.'

For very good reasons Iford is renowned for its opera, but also impresses with its jazz promenades. Jazz performances take place over the whole garden, as well as the beautiful cloister, with two or three bands performing at different times. The Pimms Bar makes for a perfect summer evening.

One of the highlights has to be the Friday Fiesta on 12th August, with latin jazz virtuoso Omar Puente headlining. The world-renowned Cuban violinist is best known for his extensive work with Courtney Pine, and will be performing at Iford with his own band which includes pianist Robert Mitchell. On the same night Claudia Aurora, a fadista from Oporto in Portugal, recently featured on BBC Radio 3, will perform her spine-tingling folk-blues torch songs in the cloister.

Despite the international feel of the festival, and Iford's ability to attract artists and musicians from all over the world, interestingly, operas at Iford are always sung in English, so you can follow the story minutely. Good news for opera virgins!

Whatever your preconceptions about opera you will be completely taken by surprise by what you see at Iford. Informality is something that Judy is keen to stress. ‘That's the lovely thing. There's no dress code. Everyone is genuinely welcoming, and nothing is too much trouble. And do you know what? The best thing is that it's a real romantic escape.'

The original Broadway production opened June 3, 1975, at the 46th Street Theatre[1] and ran for 936 performances. Bob Fosse choreographed the original production, and his style is strongly identified with the show. Chicago's 1996 Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival on Broadway and is its fifth longest-running show.[2] As of April 2011, it has played for more than 5,900 performances. The musical was produced in London's West End and on several tours and international productions. The Academy Award-winning film version (2002) of the musical was directed by Rob Marshall and starred Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, John C. Reilly, and Queen Latifah.

The musical Chicago is based on a play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, who was assigned to cover the 1924 trials of murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune.

Annan, the model for the character of Roxie Hart, was 23 when she was accused of the April 3, 1924, murder of Harry Kalstedt. The Tribune reported that Annan played the foxtrot record "Hula Lou" over and over for two hours before calling her husband to say she killed a man who "tried to make love to her". She was found "not guilty" on May 25, 1924. Velma is based on Gaertner, who was a cabaret singer. The body of Walter Law was discovered slumped over the steering wheel of Gaertner's abandoned car on March 12, 1924. Two police officers testified that they had seen a woman getting into the car and shortly thereafter heard gunshots. A bottle of gin and an automatic pistol were found on the floor of the car.
Gaertner was acquitted on June 6, 1924. Lawyers William Scott Stewart and W. W. O'Brien were models for a composite character in Chicago, "BillyFlynn."

Watkins' sensational columns documenting these trials proved so popular that she decided to write a play based on them. The show received both popular and critical acclaim and even
made it to Broadway in 1926, running for 172 performances. Cecil B. DeMille produced a silent film version, Chicago (1927), starring former Mack Sennett bathing beauty Phyllis Haver as Roxie Hart. It was later remade as Roxie Hart (1942) starring Ginger Rogers; but, in this version, Roxie was accused of murder without having really committed it.

In the 1960s, Gwen Verdon read the play and asked her husband, Bob Fosse, about the possibility of creating a musical adaptation. Fosse approached playwright Watkins numerous times to buy the rights, but she repeatedly declined. In her later years, Watkins had become a born-again Christian and believed her play glamorized a scandalous way of living. However, upon her death in 1969, her estate sold the rights to producer Richard Fryer, Verdon, and Fosse. John Kander and Fred Ebb began work on the musical score, modeling each number on a traditional vaudeville number or a vaudeville performer. This format made explicit the show's comparison between "justice", "show-business", and contemporary society. Ebb and Fosse penned the book of the musical, and Fosse also directed and choreographed.

SYNOPSIS

Act 1

In the late 1920s in Chicago, Illinois, Velma Kelly is a vaudevillian who murdered both her husband and her sister when she found them in bed together. She welcomes the audience to tonight's show ("All That Jazz"). Meanwhile, we hear of chorus girl Roxie Hart's murder of her lover, nightclub regular Fred Casely.

Roxie convinces her husband Amos that the victim was a burglar, and Amos cheerfully takes the blame. Roxie expresses her appreciation of her husband's thick skull ("Funny Honey"). However, when the police mention the deceased's name Amos belatedly puts two and two together. The truth comes out, and Roxie is arrested. She is sent to the women's block in Cook County Jail, inhabited by Velma and other murderesses ("Cell Block Tango"). The block is presided over by the corrupt Matron "Mama" Morton, whose system of mutual aid ("When You're Good to Mama") perfectly suits her clientele. She has helped Velma become the media's top murder-of-the-week and is acting as a booking agent for Velma's big return to vaudeville.

Velma is not happy to see Roxie, who is stealing not only her limelight but also her lawyer, Billy Flynn. Roxie tries to convince Amos to pay for Billy Flynn to be her lawyer ("A Tap Dance"). Eagerly awaited by his all-girl clientele, Billy sings his anthem, complete with a chorus of fan dancers ("All I Care About is Love"). Billy takes Roxie's case and re-arranges her story for consumption by sympathetic tabloid columnist Mary Sunshine ("A Little Bit of Good"). Roxie's press conference turns into a ventriloquist act with Billy dictating a new version of the truth ("We Both Reached for the Gun") while Roxie mouths the words. Roxie becomes the new toast of Chicago as Velma's fame is left in the dust. Velma tries to talk Roxie into recreating the sister act ("I Can't Do It Alone"), but Roxie turns her down, only to find her own headlines replaced by the latest sordid crime of passion. Separately, Roxie and Velma realize there's no one they can count on but themselves ("My Own Best Friend"), and the ever-resourceful Roxie decides that being pregnant in prison would put her back on the front page.

Act 2

Velma again welcomes the audience with the line "Hello, Suckers," another reference to Texas Guinan, who commonly greeted her patrons with the same phrase. She informs the audience of Roxie's continual run of luck ("I Know a Girl") despite Roxie's obvious falsehoods ("Me and My Baby"). A little shy on the arithmetic, Amos proudly claims paternity, and still nobody notices him ("Mr. Cellophane"). Velma tries to show Billy all the tricks she's got planned for her trial ("When Velma Takes The Stand"). With her ego growing, Roxie has a heated argument with Billy, and fires him. She is brought back down to earth when she learns that a fellow inmate has been executed. The trial date arrives, and Billy calms her, telling her if she makes a show of it, she'll be fine ("Razzle Dazzle"), but when he passes all Velma's ideas on to Roxie, she uses each one, down to the rhinestone shoe buckles, to the dismay of Mama and Velma ("Class"). As promised, Billy gets Roxie her acquittal but, just as the verdict is given, some even more sensational crime pulls the pack of press bloodhounds away, and Roxie's fleeting celebrity life is over. Billy leaves, done with the case. Amos stays with her, glad for his wife, but she then confesses that there isn't really a baby, making Amos finally leave her. Left in the dust, Roxie pulls herself up and extols the joys of life ("Nowadays"). She teams up with Velma in a new act, in which they dance and perform ("Hot Honey Rag") until they are joined by the entire company ("Finale").

The play Phantom of the Opera is an adaptation of the classical novel named Le Fantome de l’Opera authored by Gaston Leroux. The story revolves around a masked figure that creeps below the vaults of the Paris Opera House and frightens the people who come near. This masked figure falls in love with a young innocent singer named Christine and gives it his all and tries his best to help her to stardom.
The lead role features Carlotta whereas the young Christine has a smaller role which involves her taking lessons from the solitary and the disfigured Phantom.
